Terry Gilliam backs up Balázs Turai’s short

In just one year, Balázs Turai's animated short film Amok has been selected by more than 100 film festivals in 47 countries. The film's executive producer is none other than Terry Gilliam, also known from Monty Python.

Amok had a remarkable start in the summer of 2022. In June, it won the Cristal for Short Film at the world's largest animation festival in Annecy, and later it received the Heart of Sarajevo award for Best Short at the Sarajevo Film Festival.

Since its premiere in June the previous year, Balázs Turai's film has been selected for the competition programs of 105 festivals in 47 countries, including 20 Oscar-qualifying festivals. The film has been screened at prestigious festivals such as Ottawa (Canada), Sitges (Spain), Bucheon (South Korea), PÖFF Tallinn (Estonia), Clermont-Ferrand (France), Vienna Shorts (Austria), and Short Shorts (Japan). In Hungary, Amok made its debut at  Friss Hús Budapest ISFF and was also featured in the programs of KAFF, Busho, Primanima, and Anilogue, receiving the Hungarian Film Critics Awards as well.

Standing out among the international successes, earlier this year, the film was nominated for an Annie Award, one of the most prestigious awards an animated film can receive, organized by the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA).

The 14-minute, dialogue-free film's protagonist is Clyde, who is forced to confront his inner Dwarf after he loses his girlfriend, his charming appearance, and his inner balance all at once in a mysterious accident.

Amok did not receive any state support in Hungary; it was solely supported by the Filmjus Foundation with 200,000 HUF in 2019. The creators also submitted an application to the Romanian Film Centre (CNC), which granted nearly 9.5 million forints for the project. The film’s production took place in Boddah's 11th district studio in Budapest, with Benjamin Efrati as the composer and Péter Benjámin Lukács as the sound engineer. Balázs Turai and Zoltán Koska created the essential part of the animation, while Yvonne Kerékgyártó provided script doctoral advice for the screenplay.

The film was produced in Hungary by Boddah, with Gábor Osváth and Péter Benjámin Lukács as producers, in Romania by Safe Frame (produced by Mihai Mitrică and Helga Fodorean) and it was co-produced by Zoltán Mártonffy (CineSuper).

Additionally, another producer joined the team: Terry Gilliam, a member of the legendary Monty Python, and director-writer of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Brazil, and 12 Monkeys. The iconic filmmaker was fascinated by the world of Amok and Balázs Turai's previous works (Candide, The Fall of Rome), and he happily agreed to attach his name as an executive producer to the project.

The production company Boddah is known for Réka Bucsi's and Luca Tóth's previously selected films at the Berlinale and Cannes. This year, Flóra Anna Buda's French-Hungarian co-production 27 achieved tremendous success, winning the Palme d'Or in Cannes and the grand prize for a short film at Annecy. This marks two consecutive years of success for Boddah-produced films at the world's primary animation festival. Boddah is currently working on new animation projects from Dániel Bárány, Zsuzsanna Kreif and Balázs Turai, along with a feature film by Bálint Szimler.
