The Friss Hús Budapest International Short Film Festival has received another significant international professional distinction. On 22 July, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced that Friss Hús has been added to the list of BAFTA-qualifying festivals, becoming the first Hungarian film festival to achieve this status.
Friss Hús already made history in 2024 by becoming the first Hungarian film festival to obtain Academy Award (Oscar)-qualifying status. With the addition of BAFTA qualification, the festival has now secured another prestigious international recognition. Together, these two qualifications underscore the festival's growing importance within the global short film community.
BAFTA-qualifying status means that eligible British short films screened at Friss Hús may become eligible for submission to the BAFTA British Short Film and BAFTA British Short Animation categories based on their participation in the festival. Final eligibility is determined solely by BAFTA in accordance with its own rules and regulations.
This qualification opportunity is not limited to films presented in the competition programme. Eligible British short films screened in any section of the festival may qualify under BAFTA's criteria.
With this new recognition, Friss Hús joins a highly exclusive group of European film festivals. Prior to the official announcement, fewer than thirty festivals in Europe held both Oscar- and BAFTA-qualifying status simultaneously, and fewer than twenty of those were dedicated exclusively to short films.
As one of the leading film festivals in the region, Friss Hús continues to provide an increasingly important platform for Hungarian short films while bringing the very best of the European film industry to Hungary. This latest distinction further strengthens the festival's international professional standing and opens up new opportunities for collaboration with the British short film community.
At the 14th Friss Hús, which concluded in early June, British short films were the main focus of the programme in collaboration with the British Council. The festival attracted more than 15,000 attendees. Over the past few years, Friss Hús has established itself as Hungary's leading short film festival and talent platform. Submissions for the 2027 edition are now open, with an early-bird submission fee available until 2 August.
