Balázs Béla Call for Proposals

The call for proposals offers a rare opportunity for creators to engage deeply with their film projects. The three selected projects will take part in a script development consultation during this year’s Friss Hús festival, followed by a 12-month mentorship program involving dramaturgical, production, and creative work with professional directors, writers, and producers.

The Balázs Béla Call was first announced in 2023, and the program was successfully completed with strong professional interest. This year, it returns with new themes and an updated format, welcoming applicants once again.

The aim of the Balázs Béla Call is to support the creation of brand-new projects. Therefore, submissions cannot be based on freely chosen topics or previously shelved ideas; instead, the project (maximum 20 minutes in length) must fit into one of the themes specified in the call.

Themes for 2026:

  • The Witness
  • Unexpected Guest

Required submission documents:

  • Treatment
  • Synopsis (max. 1 page)
  • Writer’s biography
  • Motivation statement (authorial concept, additional information on the choice of topic)
  • Development concept (any additional information about the film’s style, tone, development intentions, direction, etc.)
  • In case of adaptation: the original work and its author (title, name), along with permission from the author of the adapted work

During the evaluation process, preference will be given to film projects that propose works shorter than 20 minutes.

Submission deadline: April 30, 2026, 23:59.

The selected film projects will participate in a development workshop in May with the support of mentors, after which a jury will select the best projects. The call offers mentorship programs for writers throughout 2026 and 2027, in which participation is mandatory for the selected creators.
